Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features Flathead Lake, which is a remnant of Glacial Lake Missoula on the western edge of Flathead National Forest.

The large freshwater lake is located within a depression known as the Rocky Mountain Trench. The lighter parts of the lake are caused by the inflow of sediment from seasonal snow melt.

This image was captured on April 29, 2019 by an astronaut onboard the International Space Station (ISS).
