Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows the northern Bahamas on September 7, 2019, where Hurricane Dorian lingered for nearly 40 consecutive hours.
The storm reached Category 5 strength by the time it stalled in the Bahamas, and had become the second strongest Atlantic hurricane in modern meteorological records.
This natural-color image of Great Abaco Island and Grand Bahama was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite.
Grand Bahama is the northernmost island of the Bahamas, lying 103 kilometers off Palm Beach, Florida. It is the fourth largest island in the Bahamas island chain, which includes approximately 700 islands and 2,400 cays.
