Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features the port city of Ormara on a hammerhead-shaped peninsula.

Located in the Makran coastal region of Pakistan, Ormara was once an island. Over time, wave action and drifting sand connected the island to the mainland.

The Makran Coast has a productive fishing industry, with somewhere between 8,000 and 10,000 small fishing boats operating in the region.

According to a recent study, the Arabian Sea has some of the most threatened populations of sharks, rays, and chimaeras in the world.
