Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features Guatemala’s Fuego volcano three weeks after the devastating eruption on June 3rd that killed over a hundred people and injured thousands more.

NASA’s Landsat 8 satellite can still detect elevated temperatures in some of Fuego’s pyroclastic flow deposits. According to the scientists, this type of thermal data could be used to gain valuable insight on pyroclastic flows and could also help disaster response teams pinpoint areas where rescue efforts should be focused.
