Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows fires that have sparked in the Australian state of Victoria this month, which were mostly caused by lightning.

In the last week, at least 380 small and large fires have been ignited, particularly in the hills east of Melbourne.

From Bunyip State Park to Gippsland and Yinnar South, approximately 70,000 hectares have burned. News agencies have reported that the entire town of Tonimbuk has been wiped out by fire.

The image was captured over Victoria on March 7, 2019 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite.
