Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency (ESA) shows the widespread flooding caused by Hurricane Florence across the state of North Carolina.

The Copernicus Sentinel-1 radar mission is being used to map areas that have been affected by the storm.

According to the ESA, the storm surges and flooding that have resulted from the intensity of the hurricane are so severe that they are similar to those of a category 4 storm, even though Florence was just a category 1 storm when it made landfall on September 14, 2018.

The Copernicus Emergency Management Service provides information for emergency response to different types of disasters. The maps can also be used for prevention, preparedness, and recovery efforts.
