Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features New Delhi, India, which is expanding faster than almost any other city in the world.

The United Nations predicts that India will experience the largest urban migration in the world between now and 2050, with the addition of 400 million additional city dwellers.

Increased urbanization has already had several consequences, including rising temperatures caused by the urban heat island effect. Research has shown that, compared to surrounding undeveloped regions, Delhi can reach up to nine degrees Celsius warmer in the wintertime.

Traffic, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions are also becoming more intense as the city grows.
