Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows the Greater Sunda Islands, a chain of active volcanoes, glowing against the dark background of the Indian Ocean.

Java is the geographic center of Indonesia and the country’s most significant economic hub. Home to more than 141 million people, Java is also the world’s most populated island.

Surabaya, Indonesia’s second largest city and the capital of the province of East Java, shines the brightest across the islands.

This image was captured by an astronaut aboard the International Space Station on June 9, 2018.
