Today’s Image of the Day from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) features the Hawaiian volcano Kilauea, which continues to be a major threat to the country.

A new study by USGS scientists has revealed that, six months after the volcano first started to unleash its destructive force, Kilauea still poses the greatest risk to human safety.

According to the assessment, Mount St Helens and Mount Rainier have been ranked as the second and third most dangerous volcanoes in the United States.

The same 18 volcanoes have held onto their positions in the “very high threat” category since 2005.
