Lake Balkhash in central Asia •

Today’s Image of the Day comes courtesy of the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at Lake Balkhash, located in southeastern Kazakhstan.

Lake Balkhash covers 17,000 kilometers, making it the largest lake in central Asia and the 15th-largest lake in the world. Roughly 75 percent of the lake’s water comes from the Ili River.

This image was captured by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on board the Landsat 8 satellite.
