Lake Berryessa in Napa County • Earth.com

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features features the south end of Lake Berryessa, a large freshwater reservoir in Napa County, California.

According to NASA, the artifical lake was created in the 1950s with the construction of Monticello Dam and flooding of Berryessa Valley.

Nearby cities and farmlands, including vineyards in Napa Valley, depend on Lake Berryessa for water.

When this photo was captured by an astronaut onboard the International Space Station (ISS) in July 2021, water levels in Lake Berryessa were low. The entire state of California was experiencing severe drought.
