Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features Lake Kuttara on the Japanese island of Hokkaido.

This lake, which is almost perfectly round, was formed by explosive activity in Hokkaido’s Kuttara volcano around 40,000 years ago.

Lake Kuttara is known for having the best water quality in all of Japan and some of the clearest water in the world.

The image was captured by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 on September 15, 2015.
