Lake Sambhar in India • Earth.com

Last update: December 7th, 2019 at 8:00 am

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features Lake Sambhar, which is one of the largest salt lakes in India.

After the monsoon season, Lake Sambhar can spread across 90 square miles.

The lake provides a winter habitat for migratory birds, including tens of thousands of flamingos.

However, the number of flamingos and other birds has been declining in recent years because of inconsistent monsoons associated with climate change.

This image was captured in the pre-monsoon season on April 10, 2019 by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8.
