Today’s Image of the Day comes from the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at Lake Tahoe and the Great Basin Desert.

The image was captured by an astronaut on board the International Space Station on March 3, 2018, just several days after Lake Tahoe was blanketed by a near-record setting amount of snowfall.

Moving east, the Great Basin Desert is classified as a cold desert because it typically receives a decent amount of precipitation during the winter.
