Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features a map which estimates the likelihood of whales along the Pacific Coast in September 2018.

The new online tool, called WhaleWatch, was developed to help prevent dangerous collisions between whales and ships.

According to NASA, 10 of the 12 blue whales found dead along the California coast in the last decade were killed by collisions with ships.

Elliott Hazen is a NOAA researcher who led the development of the tool.

“If a certain road has high traffic, you’ll likely have to slow down and you may want to explore another route,” said Hazen. “We hope that the WhaleWatch product can work in exactly the same way.”
