Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows the Greenland Ice Sheet, where a major melting event released billions of tons of water into the Atlantic Ocean last month.

Unusually warm temperatures moved across the region in late July, and the resulting meltwater made an immediate contribution to sea level rise.

The photograph shows a substantial amount of meltwater accumulating in northwest Greenland near the edge of the ice sheet.

The natural-color image was captured on July 30, 2019 by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8.
