Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency shows Cyclone Fani, which is expected to make landfall on the east coast of India Friday as the strongest storm to hit this region in 20 years.

By Thursday, Fani had intensified in the Bay of Bengal with maximum sustained winds of 155 miles per hour and gusts of up to 190 miles per hour, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

Low-lying areas along the Odisha coast are expected to be the hardest hit by the storm, and at least a million people have been evacuated from the area.

Once Fani makes landfall, the storm is expected to move northeast into Bangladesh and Bhutan on Saturday.
