Mysterious blue waters emerge off Alaska”s coast
Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows a mysterious chalky blue color in the waters near Prince of Wales Island.
Warmer water temperatures off the coast of Alaska and British Columbia may have facilitated a phytoplankton bloom later in the year than usual.
Scientists believe that the milky blue shade is likely caused by a bloom of non-toxic phytoplankton called coccolithophores, which contain limestone that could be responsible for the discoloration.
The image was acquired by the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-2 on July 20, 2018.
