Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features the northeastern coast of New Zealand’s South Island, where wildfires erupted earlier this month.

The Pigeon Valley fire, in particular, has burned more than 5,600 acres and is the country’s largest wildfire since 1955.

As high winds continue to fuel the fires, officials warn that they could continue into March. Thousands of people have been evacuated.

This natural-color image was captured on February 7, 2019 by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8.
