New Zealand transformed by intense drought •

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows the impacts of severe drought on the North Island of New Zealand.

The 2019-2020 summer season, which runs from December to February in the Southern Hemisphere, was exceptionally dry in north and central New Zealand.

The conditions persisted into March and April, extending one of the worst droughts on record for the region.

Vegetation and agricultural land are visibly affected by the drought in this image, which was captured over the North Island on April 29, 2020.
