On October 29, 2014 the Aqua satellite passed over the central Pacific Ocean, allowing the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying aboard to capture this true-color image of the northern Gilbert Islands.
The Gilbert Islands are part of the nation of Republic of Kiribati, an island nation comprised of 32 low lying coral atolls and on raised coral island. Each atoll is formed from the top of undersea volcanoes, and each rises only a few feet above sea level. Most also contain a central lagoon and are uninhabited.
