Phytoplankton bloom off northwest Africa •

Last update: July 7th, 2020 at 8:00 am

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows a brightly colored phytoplankton bloom off the coast of Mauritania in northwest Africa.

In other parts of the world, the perfect conditions come together to create phytoplankton blooms at certain times of the year.

For example, it is common to see blooms appear off the Alaskan coast during the spring and summer.

In the Bay of Nouadhibou off the coast of Mauritania, however, the conditions are almost always present to produce phytoplankton blooms.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured the photograph on May 5, 2020.
