Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows a phytoplankton bloom off the coast of South Africa.

Phytoplankton, the primary driver of life in the sea, are tiny plant-like cells that turn sunlight into food.

The abundance of phytoplankton affects the location and number of nearly all other marine life.

This natural-color image was captured on November 14, 2018 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite.
