Phytoplankton blooms across Lake Okeechobee • Earth.com

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows the striking green colors of phytoplankton blooms against the deep blue water of Lake Okeechobee in Florida.

Blooms of cyanobacteria are a regular occurence in the summer, and blooms could be observed across 90 percent of the lake earlier this month. The prevalence of the phytoplankton had significantly decreased by July 15, when this image was captured in the southwestern region of the lake by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8.
