Phytoplankton blooms in the Bering Sea • Earth.com

Today’s Image of the Day comes from the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at phytoplankton blooms in the Bering Sea just off the coast of Alaska.

This image was taken in September 2014 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite.

Blooms like these are actually more common during late spring, after freshwater from melting ice mixes with nutrients.
