Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows widespread flooding across Queensland after rain fell relentlessly for several weeks from January into February.

Flood waters are visible along the myriad rivers that flow toward the Gulf of Carpentaria along the northern coast of Australia.

As the waters started to rise, crocodiles and snakes were spotted roaming the streets and swimming through unusual areas.

According to news reports, farmers were hit exceptionally hard by the flooding, with some losing entire herds of cattle. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of cattle were lost overall.

This image was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite on February 10.
