Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features a region of Argentina that has experienced devastating flooding due to record-breaking rainfall.
According to the Buenos Aires Times, some areas received a year’s worth of rain in the first two weeks of January. Millions of hectares of farmland have been inundated and thousands of people have been forced to evacuate.
This image was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite on December 8, 2018, and shows northwestern Argentina before the flooding.
