Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency features a map that compares this week’s extreme heatwave in Europe to the previous event that struck several weeks ago in June.

Red alert warnings have been issued across Italy, Spain, and France. Civilians are advised to stay hydrated and to avoid traveling during the intense heat.

Paris broke the record for its all-time highest temperature on Thursday, reaching 108.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

This animated map was developed based on the Copernicus Sentinel-3’s Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer.
