Today’s Image of the Day comes from the NASA Earth Observatory and reveals that the country closest to the United States without sharing a land border is actually Russia.

Featured in the image are the islands of Big Diomede (Russia) and Little Diomede (United States), which are only a short distance of 2.4 miles away from each other.

This image was captured by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on board the Landsat 8 satellite.
