Shades of blue across the Arabian Sea • Earth.com

Last update: November 16th, 2019 at 11:00 am

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features the swirling blue colors of the Arabian Sea.

The color of the sea can be affected by a variety of soils, organic debris, or different types of rock that exist beneath the water’s surface.

Water color can also be affected by the presence of phytoplankton, organisms that are central to the marine food web.

Phytoplankton blooms are a common occurrence in the Arabian Sea.

This image was captured on November 23, 2018 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite.
