Sharp cloud formations off the coast of Australia
Today’s Image of the Day comes courtesy of the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at cloud formations off the coast of southern Australia.
The unusual shape of the clouds was caused by an atmospheric phenomenon known as “gravity waves,” where the rise and fall of air columns creates a wake-like pattern.
This image was captured by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) onboard the Suomi NPP satellite.
