Snow and ice cover retreat in Siberia •

Last update: November 17th, 2019 at 9:00 am

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows ice cover breaking up on Lake Krasnoye in northeastern Siberia. Between June 1 and June 21, the arrival of summer transformed the region’s snow and ice cover into open water and green vegetation.

The lake’s eastern shore is often explored by scientists in search of small pebbles of obsidian, which were produced during volcanic activity 10 million years ago.

The image was captured by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8.
