Today’s Image of the Day comes thanks to the NASA Earth Observatory and features a look at the Southern Lights over Australia.

The Southern Lights, also known as Aurora Australis, occur when the charged particles in solar wind engage with Earth’s magnetic field. When the charged particles encounter oxygen and nitrogen, they release light as a reaction.
