Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows Super Typhoon Trami as it moved across the Western Pacific basin just east of Taiwan.

The image was captured on September 25 at 1:45 a.m. with the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite.

At this time, the storm was the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane with wind speeds of 160 miles per hour.

The storm is expected to pass over Japan’s southern Ryukyu Islands Friday night with heavy rain and winds before making landfall in mainland Japan early Sunday.
