Today’s Image of the Day from the  European Space Agency (ESA) features the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN), a system of radar antennas that monitor geomagnetic effects in Earth’s upper atmosphere.

While this photograph was taken just a short distance away from the Geographic South Pole in Antarctica, the SuperDARN extends worldwide with antennas in the northern and southern hemispheres.

In this image, an aurora appears as streaks of green light across the dark night sky. The picture was captured by ESA research fellow Daniel Michalik in 2017.
