The Atacama Desert in South America • Earth.com

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features the Atacama Desert and numerous salt flats in the Andes Mountains.

The largest salt flat on Earth, the Salar de Uyuni in southwest Bolivia, is the central focus of the photograph and is highly visible against the brown landscape.

The Atacama Desert is one of the driest places on Earth, and often experiences consecutive years without rainfall, which makes it the perfect setting for NASA to test equipment for missions to Mars.

This image was captured by an astronaut on the International Space Station while it was orbiting over South America.
