The Cordillera Blanca in Peru • Earth.com

Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency features the snow-capped mountains of the Cordillera Blanca, part of the Andes mountain range in South America.

Mount Huascarán, the highest peak in Peru, is visible in the center of the photograph. The summit is one of the farthest points from the center of the Earth, second only to the peak of Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador.

The Cordillera Blanca contains hundreds of glaciers that provide a major source of water for irrigation and hydroelectric power.

Climate change is forcing the glaciers to retreat, which threatens the future of this important water supply.
