Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory is a false-color view of the Mendocino Complex, the largest wildfire in California history that has burned over 450,000 acres.

The yellow color in the image represents active fires, orange covers the burned areas, and unburned areas are green and blue.

The pair of wildfires that make up the complex, the River Fire and the Ranch Fire, have burned hundreds of homes and buildings in Northern California.

Full containment of the Mendocino Complex Fire is expected by early September.

This image was acquired on August 9, 2018, by the MODIS-ASTER airborne simulator (MASTER) on NASA’s ER-2 high-altitude aircraft.
