Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features Iceland and its diverse landscape, which includes volcanoes, lava fields, glaciers, and icebergs.
The country’s largest rivers by volume, the Þjórsá and Ölfusá, are visible in the southwest region.
Before a massive eruption separated them 8,700 years ago, these two rivers were merged together as one.
This image was captured when the rivers were ice-free on June 6, 2019, by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8.
