Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency features a galaxy, NGC 4485, that has become distorted as a result of its interaction with a large spiral galaxy, NGC 4490.
The neighboring galaxies are now connected by a stream of material that is about 25,000 light-years long, which is visible to the right of NGC 4485 in the photo. The stream is made up of huge pockets of gassy regions and hosts intense star formation.
The image was captured by the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) on the Hubble Space Telescope.
