Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency features the Optical Ground Station on the volcanic island of Tenerife, Spain.

The smaller telescope surveys Earth’s local environment and is used for testing different strategies for observing near-Earth objects.

The larger Teide Observatory can detect artificial debris objects as small as 10 centimeters that are travelling in the “geostationary ring,” which is one of the most valuable regions in space for telecommunications.
