Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features the highest mountain peaks of western Per’s Cordillera Blanca.

The peaks have been eroded by glaciers into steep curving ridges, or cirques. Hundreds of glaciers in the Cordillera Blanca region hold most of the land ice in Peru.

The city of Huaraz is only slightly visible under a cover of fog cover, yet the lighter color of the Pierina Mine stands out from is darker land surrounding it.

The image ward captured on May 18, 2019, by a member of the Expedition 59 crew.
