Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2), which was launched last September.

Equipped with the highest-resolution laser altimeter ever operated from space, the satellite measures the height of Earth’s land and ocean surfaces with incredible precision.

The Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ATLAS) captured this image of a forested hillside in Mexico on October 19, 2018.
