Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features the Malawian capital of Lilongwe, which progressed alongside America’s Landsat satellite program.

In the late 1960s, Landsat 1 satellite was just being built and Lilongwe was a modest fishing town on the banks of the Lilongwe River with a population below 20,000 people. By 2018, the population had exploded into more than one million.

This image was captured by Landsat 8 on September 26, 2018.
