Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features the Mississippi River watershed, which is one of the largest in the world.

Extending from the Appalachians to the Rocky Mountains, the watershed contributes to about 40 percent of the drainage in the continental United States. It drains water and sediment from 31 states into the Gulf of Mexico.

This image was captured on April 26, 2019 by an astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as it passed over the Gulf of Mexico.
