The Northern Lights glow over Alaska •

Last update: November 12th, 2019 at 11:00 am

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory shows the Northern Lights over Alaska in the early morning hours of November 5, 2018.

The light of the aurora was so bright that it was visible from space as it illuminated the Earth below.

According to NASA, the aurora likely appeared brighter on this occasion because it was two days before a new moon, when the sky is very dark.

The image was captured by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite.
