The Omega Nebula in the constellation Sagittarius •

Last update: September 22nd, 2019 at 9:00 am

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA features a central portion of the Omega Nebula (M17), which is one of the largest star-forming regions in our galaxy located in the constellation Sagittarius.

The ultraviolet radiation of young, massive stars are illuminating clouds of gas.

The colors in the photograph represent the chemical elements that are present. Sulfur is represented by red, hydrogen appears green, and oxygen looks blue.

The image was captured by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST).
