Today’s Image of the Day from NASA shows the Orion Nebul, or Messier 42, which is 1,450 light-years from Earth.

Located south of Orion’s Belt in the constellation of Orion, the nebula is estimated to be 24 light years across with a mass of about 2,000 times that of the Sun.

In this image, captured by the Spitzer Space Telescope, the nebula appears as a fuzzy star in the sword of the constellation.
