Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features Lake Urmia in northwestern Iran, which was once the second-largest saltwater lake in the Middle East.
After the 1970s, the lake basin shrunk by around 80 percent as a result of drought and high water demands. But now, recent torrential rains have replenished the water levels of the massive lake that once covered 2,000 square miles.
