The remote island of South Georgia •

Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features the island of South Georgia, which is known for its rugged terrain and extreme environment.

The uninhabited island contains 11 mountains that rise more than 6,500 feet above sea level and supports 161 glaciers.

This image was captured on December 25, 2018 by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8.
